OUR FIRST TIME AT ODDS WITH BARBARY PIRATES
John Adams will be the 2nd President of the United States. I hope you have used the essential question we wrote today on the board for the class notes. Adams will have to deal with the war between France and Britain. Washington had decided to stay neutral between both countries and that was also a problem for Adams. In The Ultimate Guide to The Presidents, it talked about the 300 plus ships being captured by French and Pirates making insuring shipped cargo very difficult. The film said the price went up 500% to insure the goods being shipped to other markets. President Adams had to deal with this problem as President too. This staying neutral idea made it difficult for the high seas to be used as a trade route with Europe, and we had no Army and Navy to even be in the war. So France who help us win the American Revolution was a little mad that we did not support them, hence the XYZ affair, and bribe. Islamic pirates were also attacking ships on the high seas disrupting our United States economic pursuits.
President Adams will make a final last concession in a treaty with people from other areas of the world and religions. Please see the maps below and see if you remember from 7th grade what you learned in those regions. The world was engulfed in conflict. The country is even wondering what to to with non-citizens and citizens that supported the French revolution and the radicalism that is going on in France. If you spoke ill of the government The Alien and Sedition Act could be used against you.
There are also competitive texts on the history of the pirates during Adams's Presidency. The Wayback deals with the treaty needed to keep trade continuing for the United States. You can focus on Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli. Article 6 of our Constitution makes all treaties the law of the land in the United States, when ratified by the Government. So a President must follow those laws of the land while in office.
